Hyaluronic Acid Guide: How to Actually Get Hydrated Skin
1 gram of HA holds 6 liters of water. But if you use it wrong, it can actually DEHYDRATE your skin.
How Hyaluronic Acid Works
HA is a humectant — it attracts and holds water. Your body produces it naturally, but production decreases with age. Applied topically, it draws moisture into the top layers of skin.
The Biggest HA Mistake
⚠️ Critical rule: Apply HA to DAMP skin, then immediately seal it with moisturizer. If you apply HA to dry skin in a dry climate, it pulls moisture OUT of your skin and evaporates it into the air. This makes dry skin even drier.
Molecular Weights Matter
- High molecular weight HA — sits on surface, creates film, instant plumping effect
- Low molecular weight HA — penetrates deeper, longer-term hydration
- Best products use multiple weights for surface + deep hydration
How to Use HA Correctly
- Cleanse face
- Leave skin slightly damp (do not towel-dry completely)
- Apply HA serum (2-3 drops)
- Gently pat (do not rub)
- IMMEDIATELY apply moisturizer on top to seal it in
- Wait 1 minute before sunscreen or makeup
