Retinol Beginner Guide
The most powerful anti-aging ingredient available OTC. But only if you use it correctly.
What Is Retinol?
Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A that speeds up cell turnover and boosts collagen production. It is the most proven anti-aging ingredient in dermatology, with over 40 years of clinical data.
Retinoid Strength Ladder
- Retinyl palmitate — weakest, good for very sensitive skin
- Retinol (0.25-1%) — standard OTC, good starting point
- Retinaldehyde (0.05-0.1%) — one step closer to active form, faster results
- Adapalene (0.1% OTC, 0.3% Rx) — optimized for acne, stable, less irritating
- Tretinoin (0.025-0.1%) — prescription only, gold standard
How to Start Retinol (The Safe Way)
Week 1-2: Introduce
- Use 0.25-0.3% retinol
- Apply 2 nights per week
- Pea-sized amount for entire face
- Apply to DRY skin (wait 15 min after cleansing)
- Follow with moisturizer
Week 3-4: Increase
- Use every other night
- Still pea-sized amount
- Buffer with moisturizer if irritated
Week 5-8: Build
- Use every night (or 5-6 nights/week)
- Consider moving to 0.5%
Month 3+: Optimize
- Gradually increase to 0.5-1%
- Real results become visible at 12+ weeks
Retinol Rules
- NIGHT ONLY — retinol breaks down in sunlight
- SPF is mandatory — retinol makes skin more sun-sensitive
- Do not mix with AHA/BHA in the same routine
- Do not apply to wet skin — increases irritation
- Less is more — pea-sized for full face
- Moisturize heavily — sandwich method (moisturizer-retinol-moisturizer) if sensitive
